MARSAXLOKK vs Floriana

1-3 (H/T 0-0)

Floriana

Line-Up Sandro Micallef, Duncan Micallef, Fabio Cauchi, Jesmond Delia (Jonathan Buttigieg), Denis Cauchi, Angel Terziyski, Roderick Spiteri, Mark Marlow, Johann Zammit (Dino Trakosopoulos), Clive Mizzi, Robert Agius (Darren Prendergast)

Red Cards Fabio Cauchi
Scorers: Jonathan Buttigieg 90'
Attendance 329

Floriana had to dig deep in their resources before securing a place in the next round of the Trophy. Marasaxlokk were better in the first half, even if after 30 minutes Fabio Cauchi was sent off for a second bookable offence. However, it was Marsaxlokk who had the best chance of the first half when Johan Zammit hit the side of the net from a tight angle.
After the interval Floriana immediately took the lead when an Etienne Barbara shot from outside the penalty area surprised Sandro Micallef in the Marsaxlokk goal. Floriana made certain of qualification when Marlow handled in the area and from the penalty spot, Etienne Barbara doubled the score. The score was 3-0 when after 87 minutes substitute Stephen Wellman scored from inside the penalty area.
In stoppage time Jonathan Buttigieg (playing his last minutes for Marsaxlokk) scored a consolation goal when he headed a Duncan Micallef cross. All in all it was a brave display by Marsaxlokk who could have achieved a better result had it not been for the harsh decision in sending off Fabio Cauchi in the first half.

In the first game of the season, Mosta had the better start and even hit the post after 20 minutes. Marsaxlokk improved in the last 15 minutes of the first half and even had a Malcolm Tirchett goal disallowed for a very dubious foul.

After the break Marsaxlokk were the better side and had two very good chances for Malcolm Tirchett with the Mosta goaler saving. Marsaxlokk had two claims for what seemed to be obvious penalties turned down by the referee.

After all we can say that it was a fair result. Let's hope for a better result in the next game against Balzan Youths next week.

We again failed to score in this game. This is our second consecutive 0-0 draw, this time against newly promoted Balzan Y.

During a balanced first half both teams had their good moments with Marsaxlokk being more on the attack without being dangerous in front of goal. After 20 minutes Marsaxlokk had what seemed to be an obvious penalty when a Balzan Y defender pulled Malcolm Tirchett down in the penalty area. But the referee waved play on.

After the break it was all Marsaxlokk, with Balzan concentrating more on their defence and trying to conserve the 0-0 draw. Marsaxlokk attacked continuously but efforts from Johann Zammit, Malcolm Tirchett and Dino Trakosopoulos were all stopped either by the defence or by Balzan Y goalkeeper Simon Grech. Marsaxlokk must surely improve in midfield to be able to challenge for promotion.

At last the first goals and first win arrived for us. This all happened during these hectic days for our club. After the departure of Michael Degiorgio from coach, Team Manager Peter Hartshorne took charge of the team for this game

The first 10 minutes we were better than Qormi, but after 15 minutes Qormi opened the score through a Martin Borg shot. After the goal Marsaxlokk tried to equalize and were denied by the crossbar after 25 minutes from a Mark Marlow free kick.

After the break Marsaxlokk put everything on the attack, but it was Qormi again who scored through a header from Fatos Daja (50') after a Martin Borg corner. From then on it was all Marsaxlokk. Ten minutes later, the Qormi goalkeeper could not keep the ball from crossing the line after a Malcolm Tirchett header and 12 minutes later Marsaxlokk equalized from a shot by Fabio Cauchi who had an excellent game. Marsaxlokk continued attacking trying to win the game and the winning goal came with 18 minutes to go from a header by Angel Terziysky. Marsaxlokk could have easily scored two more goals but Johann Zammit's header went over the crossbar and later Malcolm Tirchett could not finish in the net when he was alone in front of the Qormi keeper.
Lets hope that this win gives us the necessary morale to improve our table position with the next game being in two weeks time against Mqabba.

This was our worst performance of the season. In the first half we were a bit better than our opponents whose only aim was not to concede goals. But in the 25th minute Johann Zammit scored after chipping over the goalkeeper from inside the penalty area.

During the second half, Mqabba were the better team until they equalised at the 27th minute through a header from ex Marsaxlokk striker Jean Paul Abdilla.

After the equaliser we pressed for the winner but our pressing did not produce any danger for the Mqabba team. Our performance left much to be desired and we must improve a lot to even think about promotion

We put everything on the attack and on the 90th minute we managed to score the winning goal through another header by Tirchett.

Marsaxlokk twice came back from behind to beat leaders Gozo and join them (and Xghajra T) at the top of the First Division with 12 points from 6 games. Gozo opened the score after only 5 minutes after Sabri Rais beat Sandro Micallef from close range. Marsaxlokk responded immediately and 5 minutes later Johan Zammit levelled the score. The rest of the first half was balanced with Marsaxlokk being a little better than their opponents without creating any real chances.

After the break Marsaxlokk created numerous goalscoring changes which were either wasted or saved by the Gozo goalkeeper. Against the run of play Gozo took the lead when Dione Lautier was floored in the penalty area and Sabri Rais scored from the spot.

Marsaxlokk introduced newcomer Jesmond Delia and after 75 minutes levelled the score when Malcolm Tirchett slotted in an empty net. Marsaxlokk continued to attack and with 5 minutes to go Mark Marlow’s shot from inside the penalty area finished in the net for a well deserved victory.

Marsaxlokk dominated this game from start to finish to go top one point in front of Mosta, the latter having a game in hand.

After only 8 minutes Johann Zammit scored after a cross from Malcolm Tirchett. Soon afterwards Xghajra had their only chance of the game when a free kick passed all the way on the goal line after being cleared by the Marsaxlokk defence. Just before half time, Marsaxlokk doubled the score after a fine move from Mark Marlow.

After the break Marsaxlokk were still the better team and scored their third goal from a Clive Mizzi freekick after Patrick Curmi floored Roderick Spiteri just outside the penalty area. Patrick Curmi was shown the second yellow card and was sent off after this foul.

We seem to be playing much better now and the future seems to be brighter now after a slow start to the season.

After the break Pullicino of St Patrick was sent off for a viscious foul on Malcolm Tirchett who had to be rushed to hospital for treatment. He was substituted by Darren Prendergast who scored the third goal after 77 minutes when he finished off a Fabio Cauchi move.

Marsaxlokk continued to dictate matters. In the 83rd minute Albert Caruana fouled Dino Trakosopoulos in the penalty area and Johann Zammit made it 4-0. A minute from time Dino Trakosopoulos made it five-nil when he tapped in after a Mark Marlow pass. WELL DONE AND KEEP IT UP BOYS!!!!

Marsaxlokk obtained an easy win on second-from-bottom St Andrews. The game was all over after 11 minutes when Marsaxlokk were already 2-0 up. After only 5 minutes Marsaxlokk took the lead when Malcolm Tirchett intercepted Jeffrey Farrugia's back pass to put the ball behind Said. The second goal came after 11 minutes when Clive Mizzi curled a free kick from just outside the penalty area, into the net.
Marsaxlokk could have scored more goals by half-time but efforts from Clive Mizzi, Malcolm Tirchett and Denis Cauchi were either saved or went wide.
After the break it was the same story with Marsaxlokk dictating matters and on the hour Johann Zammit made it 3-0 after rounding the goalkeeper to put into an empty net. St Andrews could only score a consolation goal when they were awarded a very dubious penalty on 82 minutes.

Marsaxlokk lost the top of the table clash, but are still in a very good position for promotion. After only 4 minutes Marsaxlokk took the lead through a Clive Mizzi long-range effort. However, this lead only lasted 6 minutes when Paul Zammit equalized after being put through by Camenzuli. Mosta continued on the attack and after 35 minutes Duncan Micallef cleared off the line. As half time approached Marsaxlokk were improving. First a Marlow cross was headed wide by Tirchett and then Tirchett was floored by Mark Spiteri in the penalty area, but the referee waved on to what seemed to be an obvious penalty.

After the break Mosta had again the upperhand and on 77 minutes Dyson Falzon scored what proved to be the winning goal. Marsaxlokk never reacted to this blow and three minutes from time, Tirchett was sent off for an off the ball incident to add to Marsaxlokk's woes.

Both Marlow and Zammit missed goalscoring opportunities until the same Johann Zammit scored the second goal (eighth of the season) when he was put through by Marlow on the half-hour.

After the break the game slowed down with Marsaxlokk controlling the game. Two minutes from time, Jesmond Delia had a good chance to make it 3, but his shot went wide.

In a well fought match, Marsaxlokk and Qormi shared the points in an entertaining game. Marsaxlokk created numerous chances in the first half through Tirchett, Mizzi and Delia, but the keeper was always there to save. Qormi also had there good periods with Micallef saving Tarik free kick.

In the second half it was Marsaxlokk who attacked trying to score and after 52' it was the post which saved Qormi from a Marlow free kick. After 65' a Zammit effort was saved by the Qormi keeper.

With 71 minutes on the clock Marsaxlokk opened the score when a Roderick Spiteri shot finished in the net. Five minutes later Qormi equalized. Marsaxlokk went all out for the winner and a Tirchett shot went wide. But it was Qormi who had the better chance when they hit the post.

Marsaxlokk went top of the First Division with a comfortable win. Ironically it was Mqabba who created the first chances but from then on it was one way traffic. After chances by Tirchett and Zammit, Clive Mizzi scored on 23 minutes with a lob from a rebound after Sochor parried a Fabio Cauchi shot.

Just before the break Roderick Spiteri headed from close range to make it 2-0. In the second half it was the same story as Marsaxlokk dominated proceedings. On 53 minutes Delia hit wide after going round a couple of Mqabba defenders.

Nine minutes later Marlow's cross was headed in by the usual Johann Zammit to make it 3-0 and in injury time Zammit made it four after being put through by Trakosopolous. With these two goals Johann Zammit is the First Division top scorer with 10 goals.

Marsaxlokk dominated this game. Rabat were coming from two consecutive wins and one could have thought that they might be a treat for Marsaxlokk. But the game was almost all over after 15 minutes. After only 5 minutes Malcolm Tirchett scored the first goal and 10 minutes later Johann Zammit made it 2-0, both of them from crosses by Mark Marlow.

From then on Marsaxlokk continued to attack with Rabat trying to defend as best they could. Immediately after the break Roderick Spiteri made it 3-0 from close range. Johann Zammit hit the upright few minutes later. With 25 minutes still on the clock Rabat reduced the arrears after some fine work by Michael Micallef

Immediatel after the Rabat goal, Duncan Micallef was sent off for passing remarks, but Rabat failed to capitalize. In fact Marsaxlokk continued to create the best chances and were twice denied by the posts from shots by Johann Zammit and a free kick by Clive Mizzi.

With this win Marsaxlokk are almost certainly of promotion, needing only 5 points from the remaining 4 matches to be mathemtically in the Premier Division for the first time in the club's history.

After the loss of 2 points by fellow title challengers Mosta on Saturday, Marsaxlokk went all out for the 3 points in Gozo. On a windy afternoon, Marsaxlokk attacked from the beginning to try to obtain the usual early lead and after 14 minutes it was Johann Zammit who scored from close range. Marsaxlokk continued on the attack and after 35 minutes Angel Terziyski made it 2-0 when he headed in a Mark Marlow cross to score against his ex team. Marsaxlokk could have made it three, but a nice effort by Malcolm Tirchett hit the upright.

After the break Gozo tried to come back in the game and with the wind helping them, they put everything on the attack. Marsaxlokk seemed to be finding it hard to defend and with 15 minutes to go, Dione Lautier headed in a through pass to reopen the game.

Gozo continued to attack trying to equalize and had a couple of shots that went wide. But it was Marsaxlokk who scored again when on one of the counter attacks, Malcolm Tirchett was flored in the area and Johann Zammit made it 3-1, scoring his 13th goal of the season. With ten minutes to go Marsaxlokk controlled their lead and all Gozo could do was to wait for the referee's final whistle. Now Marsaxlokk only need another 2 points to be mathematically in the Premier League next season. WELL DONE AGAIN BOYS!!

With the promotion already assured due to last week's loss by Xghajra to Rabat, Marsaxlokk could play more relaxed. At the same time we were encouraged by the fact that Mosta lost another two points and now we are leading the table. We immediately went on the attack and after ony 45 seconds opened the score when Johan Zammit entered the penalty area, shot towards goal and the Xghajra could not keep the ball from entering the net. A few minutes later, Roderick Spiteri doubled the score with a brilliant shot from 35 metres.

Marsaxlokk continued to attack and hit the post from Mizzi and Tirchett. A minute before half time Malcolm Tirchett made it 3-0. During this attack, Terziyski got injured and had to be substituted.

After the break it was Xghajra who took the initiative mainly due the fact that Marsaxlokk had Jesmond Delia suspended, and Mark Marlow and Angel Terziysky who were substituted in the first half. After only 5 minutes Xghajra scored their only goal. From then on, Xghajra attacked without being dangerous but they could have scored when Sandro Micallef had to perform the save of the match when Denis Cauchi miscleared a Xghajra cross towards his own goal.

In the last minutes Marsaxlokk could have scored their fourth goal with efforts from Trakosopolous, Zammit and Tirchett. Now we have 5 points more than Mosta (with Mosta with a game in hand). So the title is even more near. YOU CAN SEE PHOTOS FROM THIS MATCH AND THE CELEBRATIONS BY CLICKING HERE

Marsaxlokk won a very difficult match against a well organised team. Our team was never able to play the usual flowing football and it was no surprise that after only 5 minutes St Patrick took the lead when our defense was caught napping and the St Patrick player scored when coming in front of Sandro Micallef. Marsaxlokk seemed disorientated and our players were committing a lot of mistakes when passing the ball. However, on the 25 minute mark Angel Terziyski equalised after some good work by Roderick Spiteri. Marsaxlokk tried to continue to attack but the result remained the same until half-time.

After the break, with the introduction of Kevin Mifsud, Marsaxlokk seemed to be more organised and after only 10 minutes Denis Cauchi went in for the rebound and scored with a shot from just outside the penalty area. Ironically, his joy was cut short, first when he was booked for a foul (which means he will miss the final match), and then from the resulting free kick, St Patrick obtained a corner from which they equalised.

With 25 minutes still on the clock Marsaxlokk continued to attack and were unlucky not to score when Malcolm Tirchett hit the post. St Patrick were reduced to ten men after a bad foul on Roderick Spiteri. When the game seemed to be heading for a draw, Malcolm Tirchett scored what proved to be the winning goal. In injury time St Patrick had another player sent off and before the final whistle Malcolm Tirchett again hit the upright.

Now we only need to win our last game to win the championship. Keep it up boys - we're almost there!!

Knowing that we were already champions after Mosta lost 2 points on Saturday, we could play a relaxed game. And it was an exhibition match given by our players to the numerous supporters that invaded the Tedesco Stadium. In fact, after only 1 minute Johann Zammit opened the score after scoring from a Marlow free-kick. We continued to dominate and on 21 minutes Roderick Spiteri passed the ball to Clive Mizzi in the penalty area who scored with a low drive. Marsaxlokk continued to attack and just before half-time Malcolm Tirchett beat the offside trap and show low past the St Andrew's goalkeeper.

The second half continued on the same track and after 50 minutes Mizzi scored a gem of a goal when he spotted Said a few metres outside his lines and lobbed the ball from about 40 metres. Six minutes later Roderick Spiteri headed in a rebound from close range after Mizzi hit the post. On 60 minutes we were 6-0 up when Zammit dribbled around the St Andrew's defence and scored his second of the day and his 16th of the season to consolidate his position at the top of the scorers' list.

Marsaxlokk eventually calmed down and just controlled the proceedings for the remaining half hour. At the end of the match MFA President Dr Joe Mifsud presented the First Division Cup to our captain Clive Mizzi. After the match a carcade was organized fromt he ground to Marsaxlokk.

NOTE: We will have photos of the celebrations as soon as possible.
